Parents of students of color in Washington: the Seattle Times wants to hear from us about equity in our schools
If, like me, you are the parent of a student of color in Washington, then it's time for us to speak up.
The Seattle Times has put out the call for us to join a month-long virtual conversation with teachers and researchers about equity in our schools. We have until Monday, Oct. 9 to register.
Here's the info straight from the horse's mouth (aka the Education Lab email newsletter)
There's still time to sign up for our monthlong conversation about family-school partnerships! We're inviting parents of students of color and educators from all across the state for a candid, respectful conversation in a private Facebook group. You'll get to hear the experiences of other parents and educators, and we'll be around to answer questions and supply research. It's called The Homeroom project, and you can find out more here.
Last week, we offered $10 Starbucks gift cards to the first five people who successfully referred someone to sign up. Now, we're upping the reward. This week, the first person to refer five or more people to the sign-up forms before Monday, Oct. 9, will receive a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant of choice.
Parents of students of color can sign up here, and educators here. (There is a place on the sign-up form to name the referrer.)
If you put my name (Matt Halvorson) and email (matt.a.halvorson at gmail dot com) as the "referrer," I'll donate any gift card to teachers and/or staff at Emerson Elementary, the school my son attends in Seattle.
This is an opportunity to make our voices heard on behalf of all kids. I've registered. Join me!
